Leak-free Cloth Diapering Systems Since 1991!

Introducing your Daycare to Cloth Diapering

When you decided to cloth diaper your baby, chances are you made the decision based on how you and your family would be able to handle the diapering system. But now that it is time to go back to work and you are looking for daycare, you may be getting some resistance from childcare providers. Some may have policies in place that do not allow cloth while others may be resisting due to lack of experience. But, if you are willing to work at it, you may be able to influence a change by educating the provider and showing them how easy cloth diapering really is.

Encountering a “No Cloth” Policy

Unfortunately, some daycare providers do have a written policy stating that they do not accept children in cloth diapers. If this is the case, you may not be able to influence their decision. Before you allow your heart to be set on a specific provider, call around and ask what the policy is at each location. This initial conversation will likely help you narrow down your choices based on the reaction to your question alone. Since you have been using cloth diapers consistently, you don’t want to start using disposables now, so your best option is to find an open-minded facility that is willing to cloth diaper to suit your needs.

If you are truly set on a specific daycare, you may be able to introduce a change in policy over time, however keep in mind that it can take a lot of dedication to make a change and you have to be willing to work at it. And there is no guarantee you will get a positive outcome.

Introducing Cloth Diapers

Even if a daycare doesn’t have a written policy, they may still be hesitant in taking on a baby in cloth diapers. Think back to when you first considered using cloth diapers — you may have been unsure about them yourself; and you likely encountered many others who weighed in on the matter. Most of these opinions are based on one thing: lack of experience.

If your potential facility is unfamiliar with cloth diapers, it may not be very difficult to get them to agree to use the products you’d like. In fact, it may be as simple as introducing them to your cloth diapering system you use and showing just how easy it is.

Ask for an in-person meeting and arrive prepared with cloth diapers and your baby for a full demonstration. Remember, you have been using cloth for months, but this might be the first time the daycare provider has tried to use them. Take your time, answer all of their questions and make sure they feel completely comfortable with the diapers. Smile and stay positive and keep it simple!

If they still seem unsure at the end of your meeting, ask if they will do a trial. There is no better way to learn than by experience. Ask them to test your system for a few weeks and you can prove that cloth diapering is no more difficult that using disposables.

And think of the positive impact you may have! Once the childcare provider is comfortable with cloth, you will be opening the doors to allow other parents the opportunity to use this facility as well. Soon, your child won’t be the only one in cloth!
