100% Organic Cotton Is Back. But Is It Right for You?
100% Organic Cotton Is Back. But Is It Right for You?
By popular demand, 100% organic cotton is back at Mother-ease.
Our new organic cotton is made from 100% GOTS certified organic cotton, with no polyester foundation added. Available in our Element Fitted Diaper.
But before you choose organic cotton, there's something important to understand about 100% cotton fabrics:
Cotton is a natural fiber, and without a synthetic foundation to reinforce it, it will naturally wear with repeated washing and use.
Cloth diapers are washed A LOT. Over time, 100% cotton fibers will thin, wear down, and eventually disintegrate in high-wear areas. This is a normal characteristic of the fabric, rather than an indication that something has gone wrong.
At Mother-ease, we think it's important to be upfront about that difference so you can choose the fabric that best matches what maters most to you.
Organic Cotton vs. Natural Cotton: What's the Difference?
Our Natural Cotton fabric is 82% cotton and 18% polyester.
That polyester isn't against your baby's skin. It's used as a foundation at the core of the fabric to give the cotton structure and help it withstand the constant washing, drying and everyday use that comes with cloth diapering.
The result is a soft, highly absorbent fabric with excellent durability.
Our Organic Cotton, on the other hand, is exactly what it sounds like: 100% GOTS certified organic cotton. There is no polyester foundation.
For families specifically looking for a 100% organic cotton diaper, that's an important distinction.
But removing that polyester foundation also removes the durability it provides.
Yes, 100% Cotton Will Wear
Cloth diapers work hard.
They're worn, soaked, washed, dried and put back into rotation over and over again. And natural fibers change with that kind of use.
With regular washing, you should expect a 100% organic cotton fabric to eventually show wear. The cotton loops may become thinner, or begin to disintegrate entirely in high-wear areas over time.
That doesn't necessarily mean your diaper has stopped working. It means you're seeing the natural cotton fibers wear with use.
If your number one priority is longevity and durability, we recommend our Natural Cotton.
If your number one priority is having 100% GOTS certified organic cotton with no polyester included, organic cotton may be the choice for you.
Neither choice is wrong, they're simply different.
Why Do We Add Polyester to Natural Cotton?
Polyester sometimes gets treated like a dirty word when it comes to natural fiber products. But in our natural cotton fabric, it serves a very specific purpose: longevity.
The polyester foundation supports the cotton fibers through hundreds of wash and dry cycles while still allowing cotton to be the material against your baby's skin.
For a product that's meant to be washed constantly (and ideally used for years or passed down to another child) durability matters.
That's why we're continuing to offer natural cotton throughout the majority of our diapering systems.
So, Which One Should You Choose?
Choose natural cotton if you want cotton against baby's skin while prioritizing durability and longevity.
Choose 100% organic cotton if having a diaper made without a polyester foundation and using GOTS certified organic cotton is particularly important to you, and you're comfortable with the organic fabric showing more wear over time.
We have something for everyone.
35 Years of Making Diapers for Real Life
We've been manufacturing cloth diapers in Canada since 1991, and we've learned a lot about what happens to fabrics after hundreds and hundreds of washes.
Our goal isn't to convince every family to choose the same fabric.
It's to make really good cloth diapers, and give you enough information to choose the one that makes the most sense for your family.
100% organic cotton is back. Natural cotton isn't going anywhere. And now, you get to choose.
